Dr. Bill Young
Senior Pastor
Dr. Bill Young became Pastor in January of 2020 after 21 years as the pastor of the First Baptist church of Blackshear, Georgia and several other thriving churches across the Southeast United States. He is a native of Rome, Ga. He was married to Charlotte Morrison (deceased) from Smyrna, GA. They have two daughters Suzanne (David) and Sara (Dave) and six grandsons.
Dr. Young is a graduate of Mercer University in Macon, Ga and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. Dr. Young believes in preaching the Bible, ministering to the needs of people, and leading the church to excellence for the Kingdom of God.
James Perry
Music Minister/Senior Adult Minister
James Perry has served on staff at Sweat Memorial Baptist for over 32 years. He began here just after his daughter, Sarah, was born in 1987.
James enjoys sports, reading, many types of music, cheering for the Georgia Bulldogs and enjoying time with family and friends!
He received a Bachelor of Music and Masters of Music Ed from the University of Georgia. He has been serving churches in Georgia since he was a sophomore in college.
James has been married to my wonderful wife Nancy for over 37 years. He has a daughter Sarah Tatum and her husband Brent and their 10-year-old daughter Isabelle in Waycross. Sarah and Brent also have a son Camp who is in heaven now. He also has a son Jim and his wife Ashley who live in Baxley.
Tal Altman
Interim Youth Minister
Tal Altman has been serving as our Interim Youth pastor since 2021 and has been a member of SMBC since 2011. Since becoming a member of SMBC, he has taught 5th-6th grade Sunday School Class and assisted in teaching Junior Church church for many years. Tal has been married to his wife Ginny for 11 yrs. They have 3 daughters named Katie, Vivian, and Lillian. Tal enjoys supporting his girls in their many extra curricular activities, riding his golf cart, going to the beach, and camping with his family, including his mother and father.
Tal went to school in Ware County, which is where he met his wife. He is a small business owner and works in road construction as a project manager with a Valdosta based company.
Nancy Perry
Children's Coordinator
Nancy has been blessed to work with the preschoolers, children and their families at Sweat Memorial Baptist Church since 2003. It is her sincere desire to share the love of Jesus with the children in our church and in our community. Here at SMBC we work to provide a safe and loving environment for children to learn about our Lord and Savior and how important it is to have a personal relationship with Him. We strive to provide the most Bible-centered Bible studies available. Our prayer is to provide our children with the knowledge to belong, serve and grow to be strong Christian leaders in their family, churches and communities.
Nancy is married to James Perry. They have been married for 36 years and are blessed with two amazing children – Sarah who is married to Brent along with Jim and his wife Ashley. They have since been blessed with three precious grandchildren – Isabelle, Camp & Cager.
In her free time, Nancy enjoys being with her family. She also enjoys traveling, reading and painting Camp Rocks.
Tabitha Griffis
Administrative Assistant
I am very happy to be a part of the SMBC team. I have an Accounting degree and have worked as an administrative coordinator for over 6 years. I enjoy spending my free time with my son and fishing every chance I get.
